China is rich in its culture and traditions. Chinese New Year traditions and customs are a mixture of the family, feasts, decorations and presents giving and the foreign, Lai See and superstitions. New Year is the most important holiday for Chinese communities. Here we outline the major traditions, rituals and customs that are followed with the new year celebrations :
- Have Get together dinner on the Eve with traditional dishes including chicken and fish.
- Chinese New Year parades are annual traditions.
- Spring clean the whole home of cobwebs.
- The throwing of mandarin oranges on Chap Goh Mei (15th moon/night) is a Chinese tradition that signifies the end of the Chinese New Year.
- Lion dance is very traditional with the drums, cymbals and acrobatic moves under a brightly colored lion costume.
